FOG
FOG is an acronym, standing for fear, obligation, and guilt. We have already touched upon some of these concepts at this point, but it is time to reiterate them—with this concept, you are appealing to either fear, obligation, or guilt in order to pressure someone into helping you. Each of these three points can be incredibly useful in manipulating others, as each is a major motivator.
This is perhaps one of the hardest methods of manipulation to maintain as it requires nearly constant leverage above the other person and something that can always be utilized. For family members, people often appeal to obligation, but other people can find other ways to instill fear within someone to keep them in line.
When you want to instill fear, you need to have some sort of power. It could be the threat of a spouse removing children if you dare attempt a divorce, and barring you from future access to those children, or it could be the idea that if you do not give someone the money they are asking for, then their own family will be utterly ruined, or they will tell all sorts of deep secrets to the world. Ultimately, there must be something that is feared in order for the manipulator to appeal to fear. If you can identify what someone’s fear is, you can extort it here.
The next option is obligation—this has already been touched upon. Obligation is the feeling of loyalty that motivates humans to take care of those close to them. If you like someone, you likely feel some sense of obligation. This sense of obligation can also be artificially created by doing something for the other party first and then seeking to cash out, utilizing the principle of reciprocation to your advantage. You could appeal to all sorts of things here—how family always helps family, or that you have done some big favors, so the other party owes you. Take your pick. Ultimately, you are appealing to the idea that the other person is responsible for the consequences that will happen if the victim refuses to go along with things.
Lastly, you can utilize guilt. When the obligation is not met, guilt is felt in response, and people do not enjoy the feelings of guilt. For many, the feeling of guilt can be enough to really motivate them to go along with whatever you are asking for. For example, you could remind your target of how much money you spent on them for some random event, even if the context is skewed in that particular example you are using, attempting to hit all the right buttons to evoke guilt.
Any of these three are likely to be quite effective—you install the strings to these emotions, and pull the strings any time you want or need something, and oftentimes, the individuals follow simply because they have been programmed to do so.
